A Garden Elixir: Eight Lavender Health Benefits

This lavender season has been incredible here at Mesa Verde Lavender. I am in awe of how much these hardy drought-tolerant plants seem to thrive in Mancos, Colorado. This summer I’ve enjoyed researching and learning more about the health benefits and ways to use lavender in food and body products. Lavender has been cherished for centuries as a versatile herb with a myriad of health benefits. From promoting relaxation to aiding in skincare, lavender offers a fragrant elixir for overall well-being. I’m excited to share with you eight different health benefits our customers are experiencing from our delightful lavender goodies.

  1. Stress Reduction and Anxiety Relief: One of the most well-known benefits of lavender is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. Inhaling lavender's scent or using lavender essential oil can have a calming effect on the nervous system. Studies have shown that lavender can lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety disorders. You get this benefit from simply smelling the plant, enjoying it in tea, and even in body products like our hydrosol or salve!

  2. Better Sleep: Lavender's tranquilizing properties extend to promoting better sleep. Spraying lavender hydrosol on your pillowcase or placing sachets of dried lavender near your pillow can improve sleep quality by easing insomnia and restless nights. It helps create a peaceful bedtime routine, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

  3. Pain Relief: Lavender is a natural pain reliever with anti-inflammatory properties. Applying lavender oil topically or adding it to a warm bath can alleviate headaches, muscle soreness, and joint pain. It's particularly beneficial for tension headaches when massaged onto the temples and neck. I recommend our lavender hydrosol for a relaxing spray for when tension headaches arise.

  4. Skin Care: Lavender has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that make it excellent for skin care. It can soothe minor burns, insect bites, and skin irritations. Lavender essential oil is also used to treat acne, eczema, and scars. Additionally, it helps balance sebum production, making it suitable for various skin types.

  5. Respiratory Health: Inhaling lavender vapor or using lavender in steam inhalation can provide relief from respiratory issues like coughs, colds, and congestion. Its antimicrobial properties help combat infections, while its soothing scent can ease breathing difficulties.

  6. Digestive Aid: Lavender is known for its digestive benefits. Consuming lavender tea or using lavender-infused honey can help soothe an upset stomach, alleviate indigestion, and reduce bloating. It can also stimulate the production of gastric juices, aiding in digestion.

  7. Mood Enhancement: The scent of lavender is a natural mood enhancer. It can lift your spirits, reduce feelings of irritability, and enhance overall well-being. A few drops of lavender oil in a diffuser can create a positive atmosphere in your home or workspace.

  8. Hair Health: Lavender oil is commonly used in hair care products due to its ability to promote hair growth and combat dandruff. It helps improve blood circulation to the scalp and strengthens hair follicles, resulting in healthier and more vibrant locks.

From relieving stress to enhancing sleep quality, lavender offers a bouquet of health benefits that extend beyond its aromatic charm. Whether you choose to use it in hydrosol form, as a herbal tea, or in your skincare routine, lavender's healing properties are a fragrant gift from nature. However, it's essential to use lavender products responsibly, as essential oils should be diluted before topical application and should not be ingested without proper guidance.

Harness the power of lavender to enrich your physical and emotional well-being. As you incorporate this versatile herb into your daily life, you'll discover the calming and restorative effects it can have on your health, making lavender an essential addition to your wellness toolkit.
